I have the honour to inform you
that in 1897 the then Acting Registrar General, Mr. Brew-
in, suggested the establishment of a District Watchmen's
house for the watchmen of the Central Division of the
torn, upon the resumed area of Taiping-shan.
2. The suggestion received the strong
support of the Captain Superintendent of Police, rho fur-
ther recommended that quarters should be provided in the
ner building for two single Buropean sergeants of Police,
who by the exercise of supervision would be enabled to
effect an improvement in the discipline of the watchmen.
In the previous year the District
Watchmen's Porce had been brought into closer association with the Police, the watchmen being placed on police brats under the supervision of police officers; and it was pointed out by the Ceptain Superintendent of Police that by utilizing the District Watchmen, expense in increa8- ing the Police Force to meet the growth of the Colony
was being avoided.
5. The proposal was laid before
the District Watchmen's Committee, and they signified their approval thereof in their letter of the 8th. March 1897, of which I enclose a copy, and asked for a free grant of a site for the Watch House.
